Friendmotron, at its core, is a Meta Social Network, with its primary service being a Social Network Aggregator. We collect posts by our member’s friends on a variety of sites, and provide one simple report of these activities for quick review. We also provide a collection of all the member’s posts in one place, so their friends can more easily keep current with them. But more than that, we compare and contrast the publicly available self-reported interest of our users, and the themes of their posts, and help them find other people and articles that they will enjoy. The end result is an efficient, enjoyable use of social networks.
We are not, however, a social network ourselves, nor do we compete with them in anyway. Rather, we facilitate their use by making it easier to keep up to date with their latest activity. With this service, it becomes feasible to have multiple social network accounts, each serving their own niche need. Friendmotron is a two-way Social Network Hub for members to track the activities of friends, and for their friends to see a comprehensive view of the activity of our members.
We believe that Social Networks are useful, entertaining, and that no single site has encompassed all the possible incarnations of this idea. No one network houses all your friends and potential friends on line. That’s why there are so many flavors: ones for play, another for work, for school, for hobbies, for pictures, video, music, and so on.
We believe Social Network users have become very sophisticated, very quickly. Our target audience has grown out of the stages of “novelty” use of social networks, and want a real tool that will help them cut through the noise on the internet, not create more. In other words, they have moved past the singular goal of “winning at friends”, by collecting the largest random list of associations. Now users want real meaning in their on-line relationships.
We believe that providing the information that the user wants, right up front, will make the site popular. Following the belief that internet users are increasingly savvy, we feel that they will gravitate toward products that suit their needs the quickest, with minimal effort or fuss.
We believe in that drowning in options, or pages and pages of set up, creates a barrier to entry.
Jonathan, the creator of Friendmotron, noticed that there is an issue that keeps spiraling out of control the more a person uses social networks. It’s a bit of a glitch, if you will.
Let us describe it:
Each social network you’ve joined has something different to offer you, that you value, and you end up with friends here, there and everywhere. Soon you start forgetting to check some accounts because it’s becoming time consuming, and you are a busy person. Yet, you are loath to quit using any of these networks because they are of use, and house connections to people you care about, and are interested in. So you're stuck, and you're updating more than one account, and your friends are updating more than one account. Then, when you do finally go visit all those pages, and there's been an update days and weeks and months ago, you get a little sad and miffed that you’ve missed so much, and swear to keep up with it better. But the time-management issue is still there… and growing.
We understand.
When Jonathan told us about his idea to fix this, and other social networking dilemmas, we whole-heartedly agreed, and encouraged him to build it. So he went for it, and here we are at Beta release. And, this early incarnation of Friendmotron is just the beginning. There are more ideas for features brewing, and they are exciting. We have a whole list of to-do's, but it's not set in stone yet. We can work on the features folks say they'd like next. Go ahead and tell us what you think about Friendmotron, because we're listening. This is why we made sure to give you a feedback form and want to encourage you to use it.
As for the ads, we're doing our best to just show you the ones you might find useful. The more we learn about your likes and dislikes, the better we can serve ads that you find interesting. The more you click the ads, the more we can improve Friendmotron... It's like a viscoushappy circle!
Why FriendMOTRON? What does that mean?
The way we see it, "motron"s are like friendly little robots. It's a system that will bring you the things you want from the internet and introduce you to people who share interests with you. We believe that web 2.0 is about allowing anybody and everybody to create and share ideas over the internet. Now that everyone has created lots and lots of stuff, it's becoming difficult to sort through it and find the stuff that really interests you. That's why we think Web 3.0 will be all about helping people find what they want. And "motron"s are what you'll use to do it! Music-motron, movie-motron, book-motron... This is the direction the interweb is going!
